# Supplement B Overview

> Supplement B of Form I-9 is used for rehiring employees or addressing issues related to reverification of work authorization.

Supplement B of Form I-9 is used for rehiring employees or addressing issues related to reverification of work authorization. This supplement allows employers to reverify an employee's employment eligibility without having to complete a new Form I-9.

## When to use Supplement B?

According to the [U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)](https://www.uscis.gov/i-9-central/complete-correct-form-i-9/completing-supplement-b-reverification-and-rehires-formerly-section-3), employers should use Supplement B in the following scenarios:

* **Rehire employee**
  * If an employee is rehired within 3 years of the date they originally completed Form I-9, employers can use Supplement B to confirm that the employee remains authorized to work.
* **Reverify documentation**
  * You must reverify an employee's employment authorization no later than the date employment authorization expires. The employee must present a document that shows current employment authorization, such as any document from List A or C. You can also accept certain receipts for re-verification.
* **Name change**
  * If an employee has a legal name change, Supplement B may be completed to maintain the correct information on the form. For additional name change scenarios you may encounter, please refer to the USCIS website for guidance.

## Who should complete Supplement B?

The employer or the employer's authorized representative completes and signs Supplement B.

Employers are required to retain Supplement B along with the original Form I-9 as part of their records and ensure compliance with federal employment eligibility verification laws. Read more about document retention here: [I-9 Document Retention & Storage Requirements](/i9/compliance-and-audit-readiness/retention).

## Employees Ineligible for Reverification

[According to the DHS](https://www.uscis.gov/i-9-central/completing-form-i-9/completing-supplement-b-reverification-and-rehires-formerly-section-3), employers should not reverify any one of the following:

* U.S. citizens and alien nationals
* Lawful permanent residents who presented a Form I-551, Permanent Resident or Alien Registration Receipt card for Section 2, including conditional residents
* List B documents
